- Segfault is genius.
- Last night on the T on the way back home from the cave, I overheard some young women talking. Apparently, a group of friends met another group of friends by chance on that car. They started talking about their summer and what they were doing that year. They were all dressed in tight tops and Popular Girl Pants; they were going clubbing. One woman mentioned that she was an elementary school teacher.
Time out.
Now, none of my teachers in grade school were young women, so maybe it just strikes me a bit odd, but I can never really picture someone teaching basic knowledge to children (reading, writing, arithmetic, civics, science) grinding with a bunch of guys on a platform in some smoke-filled, epilepsy-inducing dance club.
Suddenly, the visions of not just one or two, but every single teacher I’ve ever had gettin’ jiggy wit it to some techno beat hits me.
Particularly comical was the apparition of Sister Mary Elizabeth, the nun I had for first grade getting down to a bunch of funky beats.
Returning to eavesdropping, I hear another woman say that over the summer she was a dancer for a day care center.
That seemed a little strange, but I let it go. She was by far the most normal of the group. I am just going to go on pretending that she meant to say “dance instructor”
- Got up and hacked today. Got a rather important feature of Red Carpet done just about to a point that we wanted for a milestone. However, I might try to take that work a step further since it took so little time. We’ll see.
- Taught myself about doing threads in GTK today, and without a net connection, no less. I’m thinking about using Neon to replace the GnomeTransfer stuff in Red Carpet, but Neon isn’t an async interface, which we need, so threading it will do the job. So, I wrote up a little test app today that does some fun with threads to see how it would go. I’m pretty happy with the results.
- Did a little shopping with Vlad early in the afternoon. We got some oil soap for the floors and blinds for all the windows. It would appear, however, that layers upon layers of paint on the window frames made them narrower than what they should be. As a result, many of the blinds don’t fit in the windows. I did manage to get them up in my room, however.
Another thing about blinds: they’re pretty heavy, at least when you have to carry 5 boxes of them. Beyond that, though, they’re comically unwieldy. I was basically unable to carry more than two of them in each hand at a time, and when they’re in bags that are plenty long but far too wide, they go swinging about and fall out and all other sorts of fun things. And, since your other hand is full, you generally make a big ass of yourself when you try to walk through the mall carrying them. Had I been able to see myself, I no doubt would have died laughing, particularly when we stumbled past Victoria’s Secret. That’s why they call me Smooth B.
- Dinner with Vlad and Jacob at a Turkish kebab place near my apartment on Cambridge Street, which I had somehow managed to completely miss every time I had been by there. It was really tasty, and they’ll deliver, which will be nice when I am hermitting in the winter.
