chicken is a vital link in nature’s chain

1 November 2006

I had a very weird illness experience last night. After dinner with Brette and Phil I started feeling kinda weird. It’s tough to describe, but I was tired, cloudy, and my skin seemed overly sensitive to touch. This lasted for about an hour until I began to shiver uncontrollably. I felt cold, but not in an insufficiently-dressed-in-cold-weather way. I went to bed around 10:30 with an extra blanket and Brette brought me a big mug of hot water. That was enough to stop the shivering.

Brette said to me, “If you feel hot in the middle of the night, resist the urge to take off the covers. Sweat it out.” And boy did I. Around 1am I woke up drenched. I lay in bed for at least half an hour desperately resisting the urge to throw back the comforters. Meanwhile, my pajamas are soaked clear through. I did get up to get a glass of water — I was parched — and that seemed to cool me off enough so that I could fall back asleep.

I slept in a bit to make up for the lost mid-night sleep, and today I feel perfectly fine. I feel a little bit like I overslept, actually, but other than that totally fine.

Brette and I initially suspected dinner, but neither she nor Phil had any problems, so I don’t know what it was. It was like an 8-hour flu.
